Alms! Alms! is the seventh song of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Role[]
The scene shows an old beggar woman asking for spare change from the young Anthony Hope. After giving her some money, he asks for information on who owns the house and about the girl who resides there. He finds that the house belongs to Judge Turpin and the girl is named Johanna, but that if he knows what's good for him, he'll keep his eyes to himself lest he be punished for a wandering mind.
Lyrics[]
BEGGAR WOMAN:
Alms! Alms!
For a miserable woman
On a miserable chilly morning
"Thank you, sir!"
ANTHONY:
"Mum? Could you tell me whose house this is?"
BEGGAR WOMAN:
"Uh, it's the great Judge Turpin's house, that is."
ANTHONY:
"And the young lady who resides there?"
BEGGAR WOMAN:
"That's Johanna, his pretty little ward.
Keeps her snug, he does.
All locked up.
So don't you go trespassing there,
or it's a good whipping for you,
or any other young man with mischief on his mind."
Alms! Alms!
